Lesson 3: Divorce Encompasses the Whole Life

In divorce, each person has a choice: let it define you, let it destroy you, or let it strengthen you.

adapted from Dr Suess

Divorce is a traumatic event. In experiencing a traumatic event like divorce, it isn’t only you who is impacted. It is the whole nuclear family, the extended family, and it impacts the other people who rely on the divorcing person to continue to perform in the way they did before divorce. A traumatic event brings changes to the meaning, safety, and predictability of the world. The environment includes a Rollercoaster of Emotions, Multiple Areas of Change, and a Legal Process, as described in the diagram above. We will focus on the intersection of you and your whole life in this environment, the Divorce Coach, and the interactions with the other Divorce Professionals who play important parts in the ability for the you to move from the pre-divorce phase through the process and the divorce transition and recovery to the next chapter of your life.

The Divorce process can start long before anyone goes to court to file papers and doesn’t end until the person and/or the family find their way to the “new-normal” in the family relationships, daily and weekly routines, and likely a new place they call home.
